Please Note
The City of Newport Beach requires that all pets be on a leash when out in public or on private property other than the owner's property. We continue to receive numerous complaints about both unleashed dogs and excrement left on sidewalks and parking strips. Please pick up after your pets. And be sure your kids know the rules. The City can levy fines for violations of these rules. That goes for "noise nuisance" as well. For the text of the city's ordinances, click News.

Maintenance
of
City Trees in
Homeowner Parkways
The City’s General Services Department has provided us with a recap of city/homeowner responsibilities, as well as a copy of the municipal codes and city policy governing city trees in homeowner parkways. Generally, the city plants, stakes and sprays the trees. The homeowners are responsible for feeding and watering the trees. Cameo Community Association and the city are responsible for trimming the trees. For more details, please click here.

Neighborly & Environmental Etiquette
When you use our beaches or parks for your enjoyment and pleasure, please remember that the trash you leave behind becomes a problem not only for our environmentally sensitive areas and water quality, but also for the visitors who follow you.
Our beaches and tide pools are part of the ASBS (Area of Special Biological Significance) and a protected Biological Marine Reserve.
It is important that we do our part to protect these resources and remove any trash that results from our use of these areas.
Cameo was assessed a $300 clean-up fee for trash that was left on Beach 3 over the 4th of July weekend.
Do your part; remove your trash and place it in the available receptacles. If those bins are full, please notify Villageway immediately by calling 949.450.1515.
Please Note: FIRES ARE NOT allowed on beaches and have not been allowed by the city or fire department for the last several years.

City Road Construction
The Orange County Sanitation District will begin construction of the Bayside Drive Improvement project in January 2010. The project will take place on Bayside Drive between El Paseo Drive and Carnation Avenue, and is expected to conclude late April 2010. For more details, click here.
Fire Season
Don't Take Chances
Wildfire safety is a particular concern to Corona del Mar residents. With Buck Gully and Morning Canyon in close proximity to Cameo Community, all residents should take steps to harden their homes against fire, and to prepare an evacuation plan in advance of an emergency. We saw what happened to Brea and Yorba Linda residents in the 2008 Freeway Complex Fire. We can take steps to prevent a similar catastrophe from happening here.
The city's website contains much information and tools to help you accomplish a fire safe home and a safety plan for your family.

Newport Beach Fire Marshal Steve Bunting has offered us some tips for making our homes, and our community, more fire resistant.

Determine the classification of your roofing materials. Class A and B are fire retardant. Class C (shake or wood shingles) are not.
-
Keep your rooftops and gutters clear of leaves and other debris. This is particularly important for homes with flat roofs.

Check your chimney's spark arrester to make sure it is in tact, fits tightly, and has not corroded. Sparks that escape from the chimney are a hazard for both you and your neighbors' homes.
Our Fire Department staff is willing to come and help with your inspection of these items. Call 949.644.3106 today and ask for an appointment.

Remember experiencing the recent earthquake on May 17, 2009 (and the one in July 2008)? Are you willing to do three simple things to prepare your family for a disaster?

How prepared
would Cameo Community be in the event of a disaster which ties up
our City's paramedics, fire, and police resources, and prevents them
from getting to us for a couple of days? The City believes each one
of its 165 neighborhoods should be prepared for this scenario.
The City's website has much information about what each family and
each community can do to prepare themselves for both sheltering in
place (due to an earthquake, hazardous spill, tsunami, etc.) and for
evacuation due to a fire (especially since we live right next to
Buck Gully which is considered a high-risk area).
The City also offers a number of free classes to NB residents on emergency preparedness. The certification program, which includes in-depth training in several important areas (CPR, First Aid, Fire Suppression, etc.), is offered several times a year in Santa Ana Heights at Fire Station #7.

Be Smart About Your Irrigation
The key to efficient outdoor irrigation is applying just enough water and only when necessary. Water-wise habits will result in a healthier lawn and landscape, in addition to conserving water. Plus, reducing your consumption will help reduce your water bill.

Check sprinklers for overwatering:

Water overflows the curb and flows into the gutter

Moss is growing on the ground of landscaped area (especially in shady areas)

Soil is saturated 5” below the surface or soil is muddy.

Adjust sprinkler heads that are watering driveways, sidewalks and streets.

Consider purchasing a weather-based, “smart” irrigation controller.

Periodically inspect your irrigation system. Fix leaks and broken sprinkler heads.

Construction Hours
In Cameo
From time to time we need to remind owners about Cameo Community regulations and City ordinances governing allowable times for working on construction projects and running power equipment. These regulations apply to homeowner "Do It Yourself" projects as well as to contractors running rebuild/remodel projects.
Cameo's Architectural Guidelines state:
Section 9.8: Upon receiving written approval from the AC, the homeowner(s) must agree to conform to all the construction standards of the Association. All construction operations shall be carried out between the hours of 7:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M., Monday through Friday and 8:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Saturday. NO CONSTRUCTION WORK WILL BE CONDUCTED ON SUNDAYS OR HOLIDAYS. The Cameo Holidays are: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day (Washington’s Birthday), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. In the event that the City of Newport Beach ordinances differ, the more restrictive conditions will apply.

Vehicle Burglaries
Five vehicle burglaries were reported in September and another seven vehicle burglaries were reported in November, all in Cameo Highlands. DO NOT leave valuables in your car; if you must be sure they are stowed out of sight. Lock and alarm your vehicles and be sure your home exteriors are well lit at night.

Solicitors Update
Councilwoman Nancy Gardner advises that City Council will be reviewing the City's ordinance governing Solicitor hours and behavior in early 2010.
It always helps to hear from residents, so if you feel strongly that our existing ordinance should be changed, consider sending Councilwoman Gardner an email or give her a call. For contact information, visit her website at www.nancygardner.org
The existing ordinance allows solicitors on our streets from 8:00am until 9:00pm.
What can you do to keep solicitors off your property?

Put a sign by your front door which says solicitation is prohibited. You can pick one up at any hardware store, or even make one yourself. If someone tries to solicit when you have a posted sign, you can then call NBPD and ask to have a patrol car sent to your home.

Do not open your door to strangers, regardless of whom they claim to be.

If something just doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. If you feel uncomfortable about any situation or person in our community, just pick up the phone and call NBPD. Be as specific as possible so that they are well informed of the circumstances when they come out to investigate. Be proactive. You owe it to your family and your neighbors.
Vandalism in Cameo
Cameo has experienced an increase in vandalism over the last couple of months, particularly with the Beach and Golf Course gates. NBPD has agreed to provide extra patrols to help control the vandalism. If you see any suspicious activity or individuals in our community, please contact NBPD at 949.644.3717 and report the incident and as many details as possible.

Bobcat Sightings in Cameo Highlands
Several of our neighbors reported a bobcat sightings on Cortland Drive and Wayne Road. Be sure to keep your animals inside at night, and don't leave pet food or pet bowls outdoors. For photos and more information about our local bobcats, please click here.
