The “Do Not Solicit” registry is now available on the City’s
website. You simply log on and register your address as a “Do Not Solicit”
participant. The City then prints an address-only list for solicitors when
they register for permits. Your registration must be renewed each January 1.
An added benefit of being on the registry (and posting a “No Solicitor”
sign) is that you also eliminate handbill clutter around your home.
Please note: "It is a violation of NBMC section 5.42.125 to solicit or
distribute handbills at any dwelling unit that displays a “no soliciting”
sign, or is included on the City’s “Do Not Solicit” registry. This applies
to all solicitation and handbills, whether the message is commercial or
noncommercial."
Cameo's Neighborhood Watch recommends
you also take the following steps to keep solicitors (and handbills) off your
property:
Sign the City's "Do Not Solicit" Registry (click here)
Post a sign by your front door which says solicitation is prohibited. You can pick one up at any hardware store, or even make one yourself. If someone tries to solicit when you have a posted sign, you can then call NBPD and ask to have a patrol car sent to your home.
Do not open your door to strangers, regardless of whom they claim to be.

If in doubt, call NBPD

If something just doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. If you feel uncomfortable about any situation or person in our community, just pick up the phone and call NBPD. Be as specific as possible so that they are well informed of the circumstances when they come out to investigate. Be proactive. You owe it to your family and your neighbors.
Safety Tip
From One of our Neighbors
Your Car Keys:
Use them as an in-home alarm
Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or hear someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car which in turn sets off the car alarm.
It's a security alarm system that you probably
already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off
from most everywhere inside your house. It will keep honking
until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button
on the key.
And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot or garage. The alarm can work the same way there.

Volunteers Needed
Safety & Security Committee
If you have an interest in volunteering a little time for this important activity, please email the Board at info@cameohoa.org.
We especially need volunteers during an Alert situation to phone neighbors, deliver flyers, etc. One block at a time - we can cover our entire community. Won't you help us with just one street?
Safeguard Your Identify
Identity theft is a rising problem.
Never leave your vehicle registration or any other form of identification in the car.
The vehicle code requires that you produce license and registration, but it does not require that either document be kept in the car. A photocopy of your registration is considered as valid as the original. Keep a copy on your person, not in your vehicle.
Safety Reminder
Our Neighborhood Watch Team reminds us of a couple of important tips to make sure you, your families, homes and vehicles are safe and secure from those who are looking for opportunities to take your possessions.
In 2009 and 2010, we incurred an increase in vehicle thefts in Cameo Highlands. In 2008 we had seven thefts; in 2009 we had 14. The bulk of those burglaries occurred in September and November, and most of the vehicles had valuables in plain sight.
Please remember:
Lock and secure your home’s doors and windows at all times, day and night
Make sure the exterior of your property is well lit, particularly side yards with gate access
Make sure that bikes, toys, tools and other items of value are not left in your yards as they may “invite” a burglar on to your property
Keep a spare car key on the nightstand and use the panic feature if you see or hear anything suspicious
Do not leave anything of value in your car, including electronics, shopping bags, purses, wallets, and identification such as your car registration
Make sure to lock and alarm your car at all times, day and night, if parked on the street
If you park in your garage, make sure your passage door is locked and secured so that no one can access your garage or house through that door
If your car is parked on the street or in your driveway, make sure the area is well-lit and your car is locked. Do not leave personal belongings the car.
Please do your part to help make our community even safer in 2011.
Types of Burglaries in CdM
Smash & Grab - Late Night/Early Morning
Suspects shine flashlights into cars parked on the street or in the driveway looking for valuables. If they see wallets, cameras, laptops, etc., they smash a window and steal the visible contents.
Dinner-Time Burglaries
Residences are being burglarized while the occupants are out at dinner. Be sure to lock and alarm your homes each time you leave.
Break-In Burglaries
Forced entry occurs by breaking through locked doors, sliding glass doors or windows.
Vehicle Burglaries
Unlocked cars are a prime target. Property that is visible from the outside (purse, shopping bags, electronics, change) invites a "smash and grab" burglary. If you must leave your cars on the street at night, be sure they are locked and alarmed. Unlocked cars encourage burglars to return on a regular basis!
Construction Site Burglaries
Personal property and construction equipment are being stolen from construction sites. These have occurred both during the day and at night.
Home Services Burglaries
If you plan to have workers in or around your home, be sure you take the necessary precautions by checking their credentials before hiring them. Be sure they have valid and current licenses, insurance, bonding, etc. And never leave them unattended in your home. A common ploy is to direct your attention outside or to another room while the "helper" slips off to another part of the house.
